Osteoporosis, A Silent Killer

Bone loss occurs over time. Not catching it early can lead to a significant increase in risk of painful spinal compression fractures and debilitating hip fractures.

This condition, known as osteoporosis, often develops silently until a fracture occurs, making early prevention and awareness crucial for maintaining long-term bone health. Osteoporosis can affect both men and women, but postmenopausal women are at the highest risk. The condition often develops silently, with no noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Several factors contribute to osteoporosis risk, including age, gender, family history, ethnicity, and certain medical conditions or treatments, such as early menopause or prolonged corticosteroid use.
Bone undergoes continuous renewal, with new bone formation outpacing loss during youth. Peak bone mass is typically reached around age 30, after which bone loss gradually accelerates. Hormonal changes significantly impact bone density. Declining estrogen levels during menopause accelerate bone loss, and treatments for breast and prostate cancer that reduce estrogen and testosterone can further weaken bones. Other contributing factors include insufficient calcium intake, eating disorders, gastrointestinal surgeries, and certain medications that affect bone health.

Lifestyle choices can affect bone health. Physical inactivity, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption contribute to bone deterioration, while weight-bearing and strength-training exercises help maintain bone density and strength. An active lifestyle is essential for long-term bone health and fracture prevention.

A balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, combined with regular exercise and the avoidance of harmful habits, plays a key role in maintaining strong bones. Following simple steps in lifestyle, following bone strength with a DXA, bone density scan, and if necessary, using medications to prevent bone loss and/or stimulate bone growth can prevent fractures.
