Diabetes, A Different Disease for Everyone
January 1, 2024 | By Bauer Vaughters, MD
Diabetes is in the news everywhere. Ads for medications, glucose monitors and every type of diet pop up on websites, in magazines and on television commercials every day, seemingly every minute.
All this information can be overwhelming. As an endocrinologist, an expert in hormone disorders such as diabetes, my role is to determine the type of diabetes you may have and give you the tools needed to keep your blood sugars under control, as part of an overall plan to make you as healthy as possible.
At Aiken & North Augusta Endocrinology, we do so with a team of experts. We utilize medications, devices which include, but are not limited to, glucose sensors and insulin pumps, and an extensive knowledge and experience with diabetes to treat you and your diabetes.
While we hear of diabetes everywhere, what matters most is your diabetes. Our goal is to treat every patient’s diabetes at an individual level, because everyone’s diabetes is different and changes over time. It needs to be treated accordingly.
Why do we care about diabetes? Uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol and multiple other risk factors and lead to heart attack, stroke, nerve damage and pain, vision loss and blindness, amputations and a decreased quality of life.
We don’t see you as a “diabetic.” We see you as a person who has many facets in their life with diabetes being only one of them. My hope is that you, as a patient with diabetes, can live a long life without having to worry about the multiple complications of diabetes, and if you do have complications, to get you back on track as soon as possible. We want to provide treatment in a way that is the most efficient and least burdensome on you and gives you the best quality of life possible.
