Vitamin D deficiency is a prevalent health issue that affects individuals worldwide, particularly those over the age of 65 and people with darker skin. This condition occurs when the body does not have enough vitamin D, an essential nutrient that plays a crucial role in maintaining bone and muscle health. Despite the availability of various sources of vitamin D, including sunlight, food, and supplements, deficiency remains a common problem.
Vitamin D is vital for the body’s ability to absorb calcium and phosphorus, which are necessary for building and maintaining healthy bones. Vitamin D deficiency also negatively affects the immune system. Without sufficient vitamin D, the body’s calcium absorption declines, leading to hypocalcemia, or low blood calcium levels. This, in turn, can cause secondary hyperparathyroidism, a condition where the parathyroid glands overproduce hormones to balance calcium levels. If left untreated, these conditions can weaken bones, resulting in osteomalacia in adults and rickets in children. Osteomalacia makes bones soft and prone to fractures, while rickets causes bone deformities and muscle weakness in children.
The primary sources of vitamin D include sunlight exposure, certain foods, and nutritional supplements. However, several factors can hinder the body’s ability to obtain and process vitamin D. People with darker skin, older adults, patients with gastrointestinal disorders and history of gastric bypass and those living in regions with limited sunlight are at greater risk of developing vitamin D deficiency. Additionally, medical conditions such as cystic fibrosis, Crohn's disease, and celiac disease can impair the absorption of vitamin D. Obesity and certain medications, including steroids and cholesterol-lowering drugs, can also contribute to lower vitamin D levels.
